The Weight of Tradition: Why Marriages Shouldn’t Break the Bank (or Break Families)

Posted on May 24, 2024August 18, 2024 by Aman Munjal

Recently, I caught up with an old friend from South Africa but now living in Australia. At 60, he’s brimming with joy about my early retirement and the freedom it affords. But his own retirement plans? Pushed back another five years. The reason? Saving for his daughters’ wedding.

This struck a chord deeper than ever. It wasn’t just a cultural quirk in India, where I’m from. Here, in a supposedly “modern” world, the burden of a lavish wedding and a hefty dowry still falls on the bride’s family. This societal pressure to put on a show, often at the cost of crippling debt and sacrificing a daughter’s future, is a global issue.

The Cycle of Disappointment: Why Daughters Shouldn’t Be a Burden

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of this tradition is the underlying sentiment – the sadness, or even disappointment, that can greet the birth of a girl child. In a world obsessed with dowry and extravagant weddings, daughters are seen as a financial liability, not a source of joy and love. This mindset creates a vicious cycle:

  • Unwanted Burden: The pressure to save for a dowry and wedding casts a shadow over a daughter’s life from the very beginning.
  • Diminished Opportunities: Resources that could be invested in a daughter’s education and future are diverted towards these societal expectations.
  • Lost Potential: The message a girl receives is that her worth lies not in her dreams and aspirations, but in her ability to be married off well.

Who’s to Blame?

It’s easy to point fingers, but the truth is, it’s a collective responsibility:

  • Parents: We need to dismantle these outdated notions and celebrate our daughters for who they are.
  • Couples: Reject the idea of dowry and expensive weddings. Focus on building a life based on love and respect.
  • Society: Let’s shift the narrative. Celebrate daughters as future leaders, innovators, and pillars of our communities.

Imagine a Better World

Imagine a world where the birth of a girl child is met with unbridled joy and excitement. Imagine a world where parents invest in their daughters’ education and dreams, knowing they hold the potential to change the world. Imagine a world where marriages celebrate love, not financial transactions.

The power to change this reality lies with all of us. Let’s break free from the weight of outdated traditions and create a world where every child, regardless of gender, is welcomed with open arms and endless possibilities.
