Up in Smoke: Cannabis Chaos in Kasar Devi Region

Kasar up in smoke

Just 8.5 kilometers from Almora rests the sacred Kasar Devi Temple, dedicated to the Kaushiki-Durga avatar of Goddess Parvati. Nestled in a region renowned for its immense geomagnetic field, Kasar Devi region boasts a cosmic energy akin to that of revered sites like Stonehenge in the UK and Machu Picchu in Peru, blending scientific marvels with mythological reverence. Its panoramic vistas of snow-capped Himalayan peaks and the enchanting Kosi Valley further enhance its allure.

Yet, amidst this natural splendor, the tranquility of Kasar Devi is under siege. Rampant over-construction has led to water scarcity, while the unchecked proliferation of homestays and hotels threatens the area’s pristine beauty and historical significance. However, the gravest concern plaguing this sacred land is the widespread consumption of cannabis, commonly known as Charas.

Stretching from NTD, Almora, to Kafarkhan via Kasar Devi, this stretch has become a hotspot for openly selling and consuming cannabis. Numerous cafes along this route witness a disturbing trend, particularly among the youth, who view Charas as a symbol of “coolness.” Those who dissent are shunned as “uncool,” perpetuating a harmful narrative.

The administration’s apathy towards this crisis is glaring. Despite the ease with which visitors procure Charas from almost anyone they encounter, authorities remain inactive, allowing the local mafia to thrive unchecked. It’s a tragic descent from the sanctity and reverence of such a sacred place to the brink of collapse.

But why? This begs the question: how have we allowed such a degradation of a place so imbued with spiritual and natural significance?

The advocates of Charas can continue reading, may be it heals to clear their heads:
Consuming Charas over an extended period can significantly impact mental functioning, potentially leading to hallucinations and severe anxiety, often categorized as psychedelic effects. Prolonged use weakens the body’s immune system, leaving it more susceptible to diseases. Smoking Charas elevates the risk of chest pain, heart palpitations, and high blood pressure. Additional health consequences of Charas abuse include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, excessive drowsiness, increased appetite, weight gain, and heightened vulnerability to mental illness, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, confusion, and a loss of control.
