Starting and ending in Almora, the route takes you through Kausani, Bageshwar, Chaukori, Munsyari, Madkot, Jauljibi, Pithoragarh, and back to Almora. Whether you’re a biker or a car driver, this little-known scenic road is a must-experience, offering a unique adventure comparable to the famed Manali-Leh highway.

The Route and Its Beauty

Almora to Kausani

Distance: 52 km
Time: 2 hours

Leaving Almora, the road to Kausani winds through pine forests and offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. Kausani, known as the “Switzerland of India,” provides breathtaking vistas of peaks like Trishul and Nanda Devi. Sunrise and sunset here are not to be missed.

Kausani to Bageshwar

Distance: 40 km
Time: 1.5 hours

The journey to Bageshwar takes you along the banks of the Gomti River. Bageshwar is a town rich in culture and history, home to the revered Bagnath Temple, where the Saryu and Gomti rivers meet.

Bageshwar to Chaukori

Distance: 52 km
Time: 2 hours

As you head towards Chaukori, you’ll be greeted by expansive tea gardens and lush greenery. Chaukori offers stunning views of the Panchachuli peaks and is an ideal spot for stargazing due to its clear night skies.

Chaukori to Munsyari

Distance: 96 km
Time: 3.5 hours

The road to Munsyari is an adventurer’s dream, with hairpin bends and dramatic mountain views. Known for its proximity to glaciers and trekking routes, Munsyari is a paradise for trekkers and nature enthusiasts. The vibrant culture of the local tribes adds to its charm.

The Almora Circuit is accessible year-round, whereas the Manali-Leh road is open only from June to September. The Almora route is also less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience.

My Experience

Having completed this circuit twice, once in March and again at the end of June, I can attest to its beauty in every season. While March offers clear skies and crisp mountain air, the end of June is particularly magical due to the waterfalls that cascade along the route. The lush greenery and vibrant flowers in June add an extra layer of beauty to the landscape.
