Pinakeshwar Mahadev Temple Trek Near Kausani | 365 Steps to Shiva

Posted on August 18, 2026August 18, 2026 by Aman Munjal

A 365-step journey through the Kumaon Himalayas

If you are looking for something beyond the usual sightseeing around Kausani, there is an ancient mountain trail waiting for you.

Pinakeshwar Mahadev, also known as Pinath Temple, is an old Shiva temple perched at around 2,700 metres above sea level, surrounded by forests and spectacular Himalayan landscapes. The temple is traditionally associated with the Chand dynasty and is believed to have been built in 1454 CE.

But Pinakeshwar isn’t just about the temple.

🥾 The journey is the experience

The trek takes you through the quiet forests of Kumaon before reaching the famous 365 steps leading towards the temple.

One step for every day of the year.

As you climb higher, the forest gradually opens up to mountain views, valleys and, on clear days, magnificent Himalayan vistas.

At the top awaits Pinakeshwar Mahadev, a peaceful Shiva shrine far removed from the crowds of conventional tourist destinations.

It is the kind of place where the journey becomes part of the pilgrimage.

🕉️ A temple wrapped in legends

Local tradition connects Pinakeshwar with the Chand rulers of Kumaon and the year 1454. Another fascinating local legend tells of a Ghughuti bird warning Lord Shiva of an approaching attack, after which the attackers were driven away by a devastating mountain storm.

Whether you come for the faith, the history, the trek, photography or simply the thrill of discovering an offbeat Himalayan destination, Pinakeshwar offers a little of everything.
